On account of shoes
Aug. 8th, 2005 09:10 amMarilyn Monroe once said "I don't know who invented high heels, but all women owe him a lot". Modern men (male chauvinist pigs, we might call them) still share her sentiment. See, e.g., NR's Richard Brookhiser: "High heels make the compelling, aggressive tattoo of castanets. Flip-flops sound like water belching from a fire hydrant. Following a woman in high heels up out of the subway is like discovering America. Following a woman in flip-flops up out of the subway is like riding the subway." Modern women, apparently, don't: 4 out of 9 members of Northwestern University women's lacrosse team photographed in the front row with president Bush were wearing flip-flops .
